VI Foundation Plant & Wellbeing — 2.5L saplings tracked
GIS geo-tagged urban plantation monitoring with sapling-level survival tracking and carbon sequestration reporting — built for Vi's flagship environmental CSR programme.
The challenge
Urban plantation drives across Indian cities routinely report planting numbers but rarely report survival. Without sapling-level monitoring, CSR investments cannot defensibly claim carbon impact, and city governments cannot identify which species and which sites are actually viable. Vi Foundation wanted a defensible MRV (monitoring, reporting, verification) trail from every sapling planted across three cities.
Our approach
Indev built a mobile-first plantation MIS where every sapling is geo-tagged at planting, photographed at quarterly intervals and scored on survival, height and canopy. The platform models carbon sequestration from species, age and growth metrics, and produces auditable CSR reports city-by-city. Field teams use offline-first Android apps; supervisors get a real-time map dashboard.
Technology stack
- Offline-first Android (Kotlin)
- PostGIS + Leaflet mapping
- Carbon sequestration model (species-aware)
- Auto-generated CSR audit reports (PDF)
- Role-based supervisor dashboards
Impact in the field
Vi Foundation now has the first defensible sapling-level survival dataset across three Indian cities — replacing planting-count CSR reporting with audit-grade carbon evidence. The same platform is being extended to additional Indian cities.
