The Indev Consultancy team recently visited Thimphu, Bhutan, to engage with key stakeholders involved in the ongoing One Health and Health Surveillance initiatives being implemented with support from national and international partners. The visit served as an important milestone in reviewing project progress, strengthening institutional collaboration, and discussing the next phase of technology development and system integration.
During the visit, the team interacted extensively with the One Health coordination team, which comprises representatives from multiple government departments and technical agencies. Discussions focused on the overarching objective of the One Health initiative: strengthening the country’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to zoonotic diseases through enhanced inter-sectoral collaboration and data-driven decision-making. The initiative seeks to establish a unified platform that facilitates seamless information exchange among human health, animal health, wildlife, and environmental sectors, thereby enabling a coordinated response to emerging public health threats.
A significant area of discussion was the integration of diverse data sources into a common analytical framework. These include outbreak reports, veterinary surveillance systems, environmental monitoring data, temperature and rainfall patterns, and other relevant datasets that can influence the emergence and spread of zoonotic diseases. By bringing together information from multiple sectors, the proposed platform aims to generate actionable insights, support early warning mechanisms, and strengthen preparedness and response capabilities across the country.
The Indev team also met with officials responsible for managing Bhutan’s health surveillance systems. Detailed discussions were held on opportunities to further strengthen surveillance processes through improved data management, enhanced interoperability, advanced analytics, and more efficient reporting mechanisms. The team explored potential enhancements to existing systems that would improve data quality, facilitate timely information sharing, and support evidence-based decision-making at national and sub-national levels.
The visit provided an opportunity to align technical approaches, understand stakeholder requirements, and define the roadmap for the next phase of implementation. The discussions reinforced the shared commitment of all participating institutions towards building a robust and integrated One Health ecosystem that supports disease prevention, strengthens surveillance capacities, and contributes to the long-term health security of Bhutan.
